What Problem Does It Solve?

Uncategorized Oct 09, 2020

You should base every business decision on this question:

What problem does it solve?

You want to create a new product, ask what problem does it solve? You want to add a feature, ask what problem does it solve? You want to hire a new employee, ask what problem does he or she solve?

If you focus on solving your customer’s problems, they will pay for your products without objections. Solving problems evoke emotions, when people feel, people act, when they act, we all win.

Taxi rides were expensive, Uber made ride-sharing more affordable and easier to use. Blockbuster charged late fees, Netflix saved you a trip to the video store and saved you money. Project management software used to be complicated, 37signals created a simple software that only does what you need and nothing you don’t.

Charles Revlon said, “In the factories we make perfume, but in the stores we sell hope.” Think about this statement and ask, “What problem does it solve?”

Photographers do not sell pictures, they sell memories. Disney Land does not sell amusement rides, they sell magic.

If you are trying to improve your business, focus on solving a specific problem. The more specific the problem, the better.
