Most people ask for general advice, “What should I do?”

I do not tell them what to do, I say “What do you think you should do?”

It is hard for me to tell them what to do because they have not told me enough information.

I let them make their own decisions, and I dig a little deeper, and I ask:

  • Tell me more?
  • Why do you think you should do that?
  • Is the time appropriate to do that?
  • Have you talked to them?
  • How did they react?
  • Have you seen their work?
  • What do you think?
  • What are you ignoring?
  • Have you considered the risk?
  • Can you give me an example?

When someone asks me for advice, it means that he or she is stuck, and they are asking me to help them get unstuck. If I dispense my advice without knowing the background information, the context of the issue, people involved, place of the issue, and the timeframe, I won’t be helping them, I would be causing them more problems down the road.

They are asking me to help them move forward, I only can do that if I ask them questions, and not give them advice without proper due diligence.

I need to help them reframe the issue considering other people worldviews and feeling.

So, next time someone asks, “What should I do?”, your answer should not be an answer but a question.

Be curious and ask better questions. Be willing to listen without judgment, and when you think you heard enough ask a better question.
